Overview

Northwestern admits transfer students at a noticeably higher rate than its ultra-selective freshman pool, with recent cycles generally landing between 12% and 17%. For fall 2024, the university received just over 4,000 transfer applications and admitted roughly 12% of them.

Starting with the 2025–26 cycle, Northwestern introduced a binding Early Decision option for transfers — due March 2, about a month before the April 1 Regular Decision deadline — following the same move by the University of Chicago the year before. Northwestern only admits transfers for the fall term, and it does not require SAT or ACT scores.

What Northwestern Looks For

• At least one full year of college coursework completed (24 semester credit hours) by the time of enrollment
• Strong, consistent grades in a range of liberal arts and science coursework, not just a narrow major-specific track
• A clear sense of purpose and academic direction — Northwestern wants to see genuine intent behind the choice of school and major, not an 'undecided' placeholder
• Meaningful engagement outside the classroom that shows how the applicant will contribute to campus life
• For Bienen School of Music applicants, a required audition; theatre program space is limited and only occasionally open to transfers
